Pregnancy
Have you been told that low back pain during pregnancy is just a normal symptom of pregnancy? Or that it will go away after you’ve given birth?

pregnancy chiropracticWait and suffer? Why? Pain is not normal. Pain is a signal telling you something isn't right. Get it fixed and the pain goes away.
A study in 1991 showed women who experience back pain in pregnancy had a 72% chance of having back labour (intense low back pain during labour from poor position of the fetus during delivery).

Prenatal
Pregnancy causes significant changes to a woman's body in a very short time.  Many are obvious - weight gain, postural and gait changes.  What we don't see are the thousands of different hormonal and chemical changes occurring in both the mother and the developing baby.

All of these of things are initiated, controlled and coordinated through the nervous system.  Now, more than ever, she needs a healthy nervous system and spine that can react appropriately.  Under all this stress and increased pressures sometimes the body does not adapt well and subluxations develop.  This produces symptoms.  Dr Maclean will identify the areas not adapting and help them, and then show you how to help yourself so you can adapt better in the future.

Labour
pregnancy chiropracticChiropractic not only helps with the pregnancy but also has a positive impact on labour and delivery.  Studies have shown that women who received chiropractic care had shorter labours and a reduced need for analgesics (pain medication).  The Webster technique was researched in regards to correcting posterior and breech babies and was found to have an 82% success rate in clinical studies.
Adjusting (subluxations or areas that are not adapting) helps in three different ways:
1.  Normalizes pelvic position and movement in the Sacroiliac joints and symphysis pubis joint.  This allows improved function for walking and living but particularly in labour and delivery.
2.  Normal motion removes any irritation to the nerves in that area and allows muscles to function properly. Remember sciatica:  a nerve irritation that causes pain, weakness and numbness in the leg and foot.  The nerves in your pelvis supply the pelvic floor and the uterus.....
3.  There are four large ligaments that directly attach the uterus to the bones of the pelvis so making sure there is good position and motion allows for the baby/fetus to get into a better position for birth.

Postpartum

pregnancy chiropracticImmediately after birth, your body experiences another great posture change and your back needs to adapt to not having a pregnant belly anymore.

Your body gradually decreases the production of relaxin over the next four months.  This process helps the ligaments to slowly tighten back around the spine and the rest of the joints in the body. Chiropractic care can keep the joints in your spine and pelvis in optimal alignment as your ligaments pull back into place around the joints of your spine.

The posture of breastfeeding can cause great discomfort in the neck, mid-back and shoulders. There is the constant lifting, bending, stooping, carrying the car seat about, rocking, walking and so much more, all on very little sleep.  Life with a new baby is definitely another time where chiropractic care can help your body adapt and move more easily.
